Long Term Methadone Treatment Can Affect Nerve Cells in Brain

ScienceDaily, reporting on a study published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, details how the long term use of methadone can affect the nerve cells in the brain. The study, which used rats, administered methadone to the animals once daily over a period of three weeks and then tested their brain areas associated with learning and memory. The study found that, after this use, the rats’ brains displayed nearly a 70 percent reduction in the area directly connected to signaling learning and memory development. This result supports a previous study which found a significant reduction in brain areas connected to attention.
