Kathleen L. Sulik, Ph.D. and Professor at University of North Carolina School of Medicine, led a collaborative project with Duke University and University College of London on the relationship between alcohol and birth defects. The study used highly advanced imaging equipment to chart the facial features of rat embryos based on the timing of their exposure to alcohol in the womb. The study found that embryos exposed to alcohol at an earlier time period displayed the classic fetal alcohol syndrome features, such as a lengthened upper lip. Embryos exposed only 36 hours later showed opposing features, such as a shortened upper lip.
