In a guest post from U.S. Representative Ben Ray Lujan on whitehouse.gov, some startling facts about the state of substance abuse in the United States were brought to light. Nearly 22.6 million Americans, 12 years of age and older, had used illegal drugs over a one-month period, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health taken in 2010. Representative Lujan also points out the dangers of prescription drugs abuse, which appears to be a growing trend across the United States. In 2009, 21,000 out of 37,000 deaths from drug overdose were from prescription drugs.
