Several studies have determined that excessive alcohol use often corresponds with unemployment. But, does unemployment correspond with excessive alcohol use? A new study will be published in November in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research that addresses this very question. There are already some issues ascertained regarding the impact of drinking on work performance. These issues are hangovers, health problems from over-consumption, absences, and “drunk working.” All of these clearly lead to problems in the workplace, but it is unclear if they are directly responsible for unemployment. Another issue that has not been addressed is whether excessive drinking may also contribute to extended unemployment.
