Risk of Alcohol Related Harm Greatest During First Few Weeks of College

According to Penn State’s Prevention Research Center, the few first weeks of a college Freshman’s school experience are the most dangerous for alcohol-related harm. The Center attributes this to the fact that young students are often on their own for the first time and the anxiety of living in a new place and not knowing many people is high, whereas the grueling demands of professors and homework are not yet in effect. The dangers of overconsumption include date rape, assault, academic failure, accidents, and even death, but few students actually take these concerns into account when they begin binge-drinking.
