Heavy Drinking Rewires Brain, Increasing Susceptibility to Anxiety Problems

Those who binge drink or drink heavily are at increased risk for traumatizing events, such as motor vehicle accidents, other injury-causing accidents in the home, and domestic violence. This accounts for some percentage of the close relation between alcohol abuse and issues with anxiety, but not for all of it. In recent years, scientists have determined that excessive alcohol use actually re-wires the brain, making it harder to recover from traumatic events. The study, led by Thomas Kash, Pd.D., from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, used mice to monitor how the cognitive brain center controls the emotional brain center.
