In the month after a hospitalization for substance abuse or near overdose, there is an elevated risk for a life-ending overdose or suicide, a new study published by Reuters found. Out of almost 70,000 people treated for some type of substance abuse, there were 21 drug related deaths per 1000 people in the first month after hospitalization and only 4.2 per 1000 people during the first year. The period after release is often a vulnerable time for individuals, making overdose very likely. Hospitalized individuals may also have a lower tolerance after their release, causing unintentional overdoses.
