Screening for Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol-Related Problems in College Populations

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines binge drinking as the consumption of alcoholic beverages to the point of a .08 blood-alcohol content or more. On average, this is four drinks for women or five drinks for men over a two-hour period. In a recent survey conducted by NIAAA, at least 39% to 44% of college students surveyed stated they had participated in binge drinking within the last two weeks. These startling figures have prompted a launch of screening programs on and around college campuses across the country to reach various high-risk student populations.
