Alcohol and drug-related traffic accidents appear to be on the rise in Florida. Spencer Aronfeld, a Miami wrongful-death accident lawyer and founder of Lawyers to the Rescue, contends that prevention, not punishment, is the key to decreasing drunk-driving accidents. While friends and family have an obligation to intervene if they know that someone close to them is abusing drugs or alcohol, Aronfeld believes that primary care physicians and pediatricians are in the best position to diagnose and assess the risk of substance abuse among their patients. He is of the opinion that early and frequent screening may help prevent and even eliminate many drug and alcohol-related traffic accidents.
