Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and Congressman Steny Hoyer, House Democratic Whip, recently co-hosted a round-table discussion with leaders from the Maryland public health and safety systems. The meeting concerned drug policy in Maryland’s 5th congressional district. Director Kerlikowske emphasized a balanced approach to drug policy, that is, one that included prevention, treatment, and recovery programs as well as effectively enforcing existing laws regarding illegal drug use. Criminal justice reform was also a topic of discussion at the round-table. Director Kerlikowske pointed out several criminal justice efforts that the administration is promoting as an alternative to arrest and incarceration of drug offenders.
