What Do Bullying and Substance Abuse Have In Common?

Are bullying and substance abuse related or are they totally disparate actions? October is both Bullying Prevention Month and National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and is a good time to reflect on research that shows a correlation between the two behaviors. Teens who bully their peers are also likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. Likewise, there is a strong link between the environment in which teenagers are nurtured and their likelihood to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Recognizing and reacting to the risk factors is essential to providing intervention plans. Family and peers play an extremely important part in how a teen reacts to both the people around him, as well as drugs and alcohol.
