Substance Abuse Prevention Month concluded on October 31, but the effort to stop substance abuse continues every day. Nearly 17 million people over the age of 12 are classified as having drug or alcohol dependencies. Approximately 79,000 deaths are attributed to alcohol consumption. Over 23 million Americans use illegal drugs, and more than 6 million people in the U.S. abuse prescription drugs. October saw many communities come together to help educate its citizens regarding the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse through the use of panel discussions, forums, and debates. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) helps administer federal grants to community-based programs geared at preventing drug and alcohol abuse.
