The negative effects of alcohol are well-known to many; however, for individuals with diabetes, the severity of these effects is often compounded. Type 1 diabetes, for example, is a disease which requires insulin dependency. The over-consumption of alcohol causes blood sugar levels to plummet for as long as 12 hours after an episode of drinking for people who use blood-sugar lowering medication. Excessive vomiting, a common side-effect of over-consumption of alcohol can have even more dangerous consequences when the diabetic individual needs to eat something to regulate his/her blood sugar levels, but then cannot keep any food down.
