Is Alcohol Running or Ruining Your Life?

Once you start, is it hard to stop?

Do you wonder why other people can have a drink or two while you keep drinking until you are intoxicated or black out? Maybe you feel remorse the next morning, especially if you can't remember the details. Or you remember that your "other side" came out, and the angry words or foolish behavior are still sitting on your chest.

Maybe it's the headache, the nausea, the shaking. Maybe it's a DUI or another legal problem. Maybe it's friends and family quietly telling you they're worried. You might still be high functioning, getting the kids to school on time, making it to work. But alcohol is creating strain, and you know it.

A couple of drinks can feel like a better version of you. They can also make you feel weak, powerless to stop, and convinced something is wrong with you. You are not alone in that, and it doesn't have to stay this way.

What We Help With

The things alcohol counseling can actually change.

  • Understanding where your drinking falls on the spectrum of use, abuse, and alcoholism
  • Identifying the stress, trauma, anxiety, or depression underneath heavy drinking
  • Learning stress-reduction strategies that don't require a drink to work
  • Setting concrete, realistic goals around cutting back or quitting
  • Relapse prevention planning for the moments most likely to catch you
  • Navigating work, parenting, and social life without alcohol as a crutch
  • Repairing relationships that have been strained by years of drinking
  • Building self-esteem and confidence after a long stretch of shame
  • Exploring responsible, moderate drinking practices if full sobriety isn't your goal yet
  • Long-term support through the real-life ups and downs of recovery
How We Approach It

Evidence-based counseling, at your pace, without shame.

Alcohol abuse is common in our culture. One study reports that thirty percent of U.S. adults have either abused alcohol or met the criteria for alcoholism. It is easily obtained, socially acceptable, and often the social norm, which makes it easy to overlook and hard to stop. Some people are predisposed to addiction. Others start drinking heavily after a trauma, a loss, or a major life transition. Either way, the pattern looks the same from the inside: what started as a way to relax slowly turned into a way to cope, and then into something you can no longer control on your own.

In alcohol counseling, we identify, explore, and address the physical, psychological, and emotional impact alcohol is having on your life. We name the legal, social, and family problems it has caused. We look at your triggers, and we look at the coping patterns underneath them. Depression especially tends to follow heavy drinking, because alcohol is a depressant. Once we can see the shape of what's going on, we can build something healthier in its place.

Addiction is hard to beat. People with addictions are prone to relapse. That's the honest truth. But when people seek real help instead of trying to control or quit drinking on their own, the rates of success go up significantly. With twenty-five-plus years of experience in alcohol counseling, and more than thirty years of personal sobriety, we know this work from both sides of the chair. It is possible to get your life back, and it is possible to build a better one.

Common Questions

Things people ask before picking up the phone.

Past treatment often misses things. Parts of your history, a current life situation, or a pattern nobody named. You are also in a different place than you were last time. The real work is finding the right support and being willing to accept it. If you want a life free from alcohol, don't give up. There is always room for something to finally land.

No. This is a judgment-free space and you are in charge of your counseling. If your goal is to cut down rather than completely stop, that is where we start. Recovery is personal. You set the pace, and we provide the support, guidance, and strategies.

Seeking help is not weakness. Alcoholism is a disease. If you were diagnosed with cancer or diabetes, you wouldn't try to willpower your way through it. Sometimes you need a professional to see clearly what you're actually dealing with before you can make the right changes.

We talk about the physical, emotional, and relational impact alcohol is having on your life. We look at what triggers the heavier drinking, and we explore healthier ways to handle stress, anxiety, and old pain. Over time we build in relapse prevention strategies and practical sober living skills. Every session is private and paced to you.

Yes. We see clients in-office in Houston and online throughout Texas using secure video. For many people online works just as well as in-person and removes the hurdle of traffic, childcare, or a demanding schedule.

Every person is different. Some clients work with us for a few months around a specific goal. Others stay in counseling for a year or more as they do deeper work on trauma, family history, or long-term sobriety. We'll map out a plan together and revisit it as things change.
