Americans for Safe Access, advocates for the use of medical marijuana, are hoping that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will force the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to hold a hearing, and possibly reverse the current classification of marijuana. Right now, marijuana is classified as a “Schedule I” controlled substance, which indicates that it has no accepted medical use and is highly likely to be abused. Proponents of the drug contend that it is effective as a medical treatment, and can help people relieve the chronic pain and negative side effects often suffered during chemotherapy.
