A new online training tool aimed at helping doctors prescribe and manage patients receiving painkillers was recently launched by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The training materials are part of NIDA’s NIDAMED initiative, which is aimed at helping doctors, medical interns, and residents recognize and treat the difficult problems surrounding prescription drug abuse. In addition to providing information, the self-guided modules that comprise the tool will also allow doctors to obtain continuing medical education credits. The video modules will use a test-and-teach approach which will allow doctors to more effectively understand their patients and, hopefully, provide better ways to communicate about sensitive issues.
