Recent studies indicate that the use of prescription drugs is on the rise while illegal drug use appears to be declining. Findings are based on emergency room visits related to drug abuse from 2007 to 2009. Emergency rooms in 11 large cities and a number of smaller communities were monitored for the study. The author of the report, Dr. Asokumar Buvanendran of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, stated in a news release that he hopes the findings will help emergency room personnel find more effective treatments for prescription drug addiction and also serve as a vehicle for better educating their patients.
