The ninth day of the ninth month, that is, September 9, has been designated International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day. It is a reminder that any woman who is pregnant or considering becoming pregnant should abstain from drinking alcohol. Even light or moderate use of alcohol can cause physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities with possible lifelong implications. Tom Donaldson, president of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS), stated that no amount of alcohol is completely safe, so why risk possible stillbirth or complications that may challenge your child throughout his or her life?
