Carolyn Hughes, freelance author, discusses her journey to recovery in her upcoming book, The Hurt Healer and briefly discusses in her article the concept of “recovery resentment”. “Recovery Resentment” is a common occurrence for many loved ones when an alcoholic successfully finds sobriety. Although the alcoholism is no longer affecting the loved ones’ life, the loved still feels sadness, anger, and resentment towards the alcoholic because of the heartache and disappointment that that loved one has felt in the past waiting for the alcoholic to get sober. This can also occur when the recovering alcoholic begins to resent the fact that they are not drinking and their significant other still is.
