Only about ten percent of Americans with substance abuse problems receive the help and treatment they need, according to a report released by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. In order to provide more assistance to those seeking help for drug abuse, a nation-wide training program for doctors was launched last year sponsored by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). Participants in the program have completed training in another specialty, such as internal medicine or family practice, and are now involved in a one or two-year residency program in addiction medicine.
