Georgia Koukiou and Vassilis Anastassopoulos with the University of Greece, Patras, are working on technology that could help identify drunks in bars and other public places before they become a nuisance or possibly even a danger. Typically, law enforcement must rely on subjective behavior to help them determine whether an individual has over-consumed alcohol. This technology would allow law enforcement to use thermal imaging scans to assist them. The scans would detect the level of dilation in facial blood vessels, and then compare the results to scans of sober individuals to help in deciphering intoxication.
